Sharing Is Caring: 1:1 Sessions for Helping Developers
— mentoring, career, 1on1, career-guidance
At some point in your career, you think about how useful it would be to help people. Some people come to this quite quickly (in my opinion, too quickly, but I don't judge).
And this is what I have come across very often in the last couple of years, these are questions from developers in the spirit of:
- am I going there?
- is my level normal?
- why do I seem to work a lot, but don't feel any growth?
And the problem is almost never the knowledge or even the experience that these developers have.
Let's rewind a little
In 2020, at the height of COVID, I attended the Mentor School at the Workshop. Then it looked like the "right" idea, you can help people systematically and for a long time, but over time I realized that I was not very close to the format of mentoring as a process. With all these regular calls, goals, tracking and a long horizon.
But I found something else close to my heart: short, open conversations, after which a person's head becomes noticeably clearer.
And then I thought I recently conducted a small survey (which you can still answer) in our chats, just to check the feeling that I'm thinking correctly. And almost all the questions were not about frameworks or technologies.
Most of the questions were about the state and uncertainty:
- I don't seem to be a junior anymore, but it's not clear anymore
- I want to change jobs, but I'm afraid of interviews
- I'm not sure if my code is up to the next level
- it is difficult to make architectural decisions and defend them
I've seen this same thing happen too often in live conversations too. And every time I noticed that in 30-60 minutes we solved questions that a person had been carrying around in his head for months. And this is far from because I "know more," but because I can look from the outside, ask uncomfortable questions and quickly sort the situation into pieces.
From this the 1:1 format was born. What (for me) is important: no promises of "growth in N months" and no mentoring for the sake of mentoring.
Just one-off sessions when needed:
- honestly record where you are now
- remove chaos in the head and in decisions
- understand what next step really makes sense
